Meal recovery relies on dedicated volunteers

Whether you have an hour a day or an hour a month to volunteer, you can make a real impact on the lives of your neighbors – and on the health of our planet. Our volunteers recover prepared meals from corporate cafeterias, schools, universities and hospitals and distribute them to our local community in need.

Volunteer FAQ

Whether you’re joining us for the first time or looking for more ways to get involved, here are some of the most common questions our volunteers ask.

Getting started

What volunteer opportunities are available?

Primarily, we are looking for volunteers to deliver meals to households or partner organizations. On occasion, we have other organizational needs that volunteers can support. Please read the Volunteer Opportunities section  to learn more.

How do I sign up to volunteer?

The first step is to submit our Volunteer Application (embedded link). Please review our Current Volunteer Opportunities (link to section) before applying. From there, one of our Volunteer Coordinators will reach out and guide you through the rest of our process, which includes completing our volunteer waiver and online training.

Can I volunteer if I am under 18 years of age?

We have some opportunities for those 18 years of age and younger; however, most of our opportunities require a driver’s license and car insurance. Parents can volunteer with their children for all opportunities except home delivery.

Can I volunteer as part of a corporate or non-profit organization group?

We do not currently offer standard group opportunities. If you would be interested in exploring developing a custom opportunity, please reach out to Emily Bailey ([email protected]).

Can I volunteer with a friend or family member?

Yes! We would welcome you both to become volunteers with us – it can be a wonderful activity to do together.

I want to learn more about volunteering with Share My Meals before applying. Who can I reach out to?

To learn about volunteering in the Princeton area, please contact Emily Bailey ([email protected]).

How can I stay involved with Share My Meals outside of volunteering?

We welcome you to share about our organization with friends, family, and professional networks. To support our work financially, please visit the our Donation page. We are also very active on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and we even have a quarterly newsletter that you can subscribe to here. Follow us on social media to get to know about events, celebrations, stakeholder stories and other SMM news!

Volunteer roles

What days and times are volunteer shifts available?

Shifts occur between 7:00 AM and 4:00 PM on weekdays. Home delivery shifts (only in Princeton) take place from 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM on weekdays and 11:00am to 1:00pm on Saturdays. You can see all available shifts and sign up for the ones you would like once you are onboarded as a volunteer.

How long is a typical shift?

Shifts take between 30 and 90 minutes from pick-up to delivery.

How often am I expected to volunteer?

Delivery routes run on a weekly schedule. Volunteers aren’t required to commit every week, but we encourage regular participation to help ensure consistent support for our partners.

Do I need any special training or experience?

No prior experience is required for meal delivery. We provide mandatory online training, which covers basic food safety practices and explains how to use our mobile app. Volunteers should be comfortable carrying loads up to 30 pounds.

Do I need special equipment to volunteer?

We will provide you with reusable bags to transport meals during your shifts. You will be required to download a free App to use on your personal phone during deliveries. Volunteers drive their personal vehicles while volunteering.

Do I need special insurance to volunteer?

Volunteers are required to have a valid driver’s license and auto insurance coverage that meets either a combined single limit of $300,000 or Bodily Injury Liability coverage of $100,000 per person and $300,000 per accident.
